Retina Services

The retina is the innermost, light-sensitive layer of the eye. This layer senses light and sends signals to the brain so you can see.

Many retinal diseases share some common symptoms. These may include:

  • Seeing floating specks or cobwebs.
  • Blurred or distorted vision in which straight lines can look wavy.
  • Defects in the side vision.
  • Vision loss.

Risk factors for retinal diseases might include:

  • Aging/Smoking/obesity.
  • High myopia
  • Having diabetes /hypertension / cardiovascular diseases/kidney disease.
  • Eye trauma.
  • A family history of retinal diseases

Vitrectomy:

Vitrectomy is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of the vitreous gel from the inside of the eye. This gel-like substance helps maintain the eye’s shape and is located between the lens and the retina. Vitrectomy is often performed to treat various eye conditions, such as retinal detachment, diabetic retinopathy  to clear blood or dropped lens from the vitreous. After the procedure, the eye may be filled with a saline solution, gas, or silicone oil to help maintain its structure and support healing.

Diabetic Disease of the Retina

Macular edema, which is swelling in the central part of the retina, can lead to blurred fine vision. Additionally, fragile new blood vessels may develop and rupture, resulting in bleeding within the eye, which can blur overall vision. In the early stages of this condition, vision may still be relatively clear, making it easy to overlook potential issues. Therefore, it’s crucial for individuals with diabetes to have regular retinal examinations to monitor their eye health.

Retinal Detachment

Retinal detachment is a medical condition where the retina, the light-sensitive layer of tissue at the back of the eye, separates from its underlying supportive tissue. This can lead to vision loss if not treated promptly. Symptoms may include sudden flashes of light, floaters, or a shadow or curtain over part of the visual field. It can be caused by factors such as aging, injury, or certain eye diseases. Treatment often involves surgery to reattach the retina.

Retinal vein occlusion

Retinal vein occlusion occurs when the small blood vessels that drain blood from the retina become blocked. This condition is more frequently seen in individuals with diabetes or high blood pressure. When a retinal vein is occluded, it can lead to swelling of the retina due to fluid and blood, resulting in blurred vision in both the central and peripheral fields. In some cases, this blockage may trigger the growth of new blood vessels, which can cause pain and significantly increase pressure inside the eye, leading to neovascular glaucoma.

Retinal lasers

Retinal laser treatment refers to procedures that use laser technology to treat conditions such as retinal tears, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusions. The laser can help seal retinal tears, reduce swelling, or create scars to stabilize the retina. These treatments are generally outpatient procedures and can help prevent vision loss or improve vision in affected areas
